TaeKwon-Do

TaeKwon-Do

a traditional Korean martial art that combines powerful techniques with a philosophy of discipline and respect to develop strength, confidence, and character

a path to strength, discipline, and inner growth

Traditional TaeKwon-Do is a time-honored martial art originally developed by General Choi Hong Hi for the South Korean military. Its name roughly translates to “the art or way of the hand and foot”—a fitting description of its precise, powerful techniques and balanced movement. Though born in a military context, TaeKwon-Do has since evolved into a practice suitable for people of all ages and backgrounds. At The Lotus Academy, we preserve its traditional roots while offering a supportive, inclusive environment where students can grow both physically and personally.

what you’ll learn

At its core, TaeKwon-Do is a striking art focused on dynamic movement and practical self-defense. Techniques are divided into three foundational categories:

  • Kicks – explosive, high-energy movements that train balance, coordination, and power

  • Strikes – focused attacks using hands, elbows, and forearms

  • Blocks – precise defensive maneuvers designed to redirect or neutralize attacks

At The Lotus Academy, we expand on this foundation with additional training in releases, take-downs, and throws creating a well-rounded and adaptable skillset. While every class will be unique, each session is grounded in five foundational training components:

  • Fundamental Movements – basic techniques practiced for precision and body awareness

  • Forms (Patterns) – pre-arranged sequences of movements that embody martial principles

  • Sparring – controlled, partner-based practice to apply techniques in real time

  • Forging or Breaking – demonstrating power and focus through conditioning and board breaking

  • Self-Defense – practical applications for personal protection and confidence

train the body. fortify the mind. awaken the Spirit.

TaeKwon-Do supports a student’s development in body, mind, and Spirit. Even though TaeKwon-Do is primarily a physical practice, it provides a path to personal transformation. With consistent training, it becomes a means of mental and spiritual education—a discipline that fosters deep focus, mental clarity, and emotional strength. The art is anchored in five guiding tenets: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit. These principles are not just recited—they’re forged. Once embodied, they shape how students approach challenges, carry themselves, and interact with the world.

A consistent practice offers a wide range of benefits which may include:

  • Improved muscle tone, stamina, and mobility

  • Increased flexibility, coordination, and body awareness

  • Boosted self-confidence, focus, and discipline

  • Strength of character, leadership skills, and social connection

“A [dojang] is a miniature cosmos where we make contact with ourselves - our fears, anxieties, reactions, and habits. It is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an opponent but rather a partner engaged in helping us understand ourselves more fully.”

— Joe Hyams, Zen in the Martial Arts

We don’t love putting these numbers in front of you. But we need to. Because they reflect the world we live in — and why this class matters.

Every 68 seconds, an American is assaulted. Every 9 minutes, that victim is a child. 91% of all sexual assault victims are female. And 1 in 3 girls experiences her first assault between the ages of 11 and 17. (Source: RAINN, NSVRC)

These statistics are heartbreaking. But they make one thing painfully clear: Women and children need self-defense training more than anyone.

FAQs

What is the difference between TaeKwon-Do and Self-Defense?

Think of it this way: TaeKwon-Do includes self-defense, but self-defense doesn’t make you a martial artist. Our TaeKwon-Do program is a comprehensive martial art—blending physical technique, discipline, mindset training, and long-term progression through belt ranks. You’ll build self-defense skills and grow as a martial artist. In contrast, our self-defense classes focus on the essentials—practical, effective techniques for real-world situations. It’s a great option if you’re looking for immediate tools without the formal structure or long-term commitment of martial arts training.

Are classes just for children?

We welcome both adults and children to join our classes and experience the many physical, mental, and emotional benefits martial arts has to offer. While we typically recommend starting at age 7 and up for kids, we understand that every child is unique. Some may be ready for training a little earlier, while others might need more time. If you’re unsure about your child’s readiness, we’d be happy to assess their individual needs during a free private introduction.

How long will it take to become a black belt?

There’s no set timeline as it really depends on the individual. At The Lotus Academy, we believe in progress over perfection, and that each student will move through the curriculum at their own pace. Grand Master Gantner will determine when a student is ready to test based on effort, consistency, performance, and dedication.

While earning your first black belt is a meaningful milestone, it's not the final destination. In the spirit of true martial arts, learning never ends. That’s why there are multiple levels of black belt—each one marking a deeper understanding of the art and of yourself.

I’ve never done anything like this before, what should I expect?

We understand that trying something new can feel intimidating! That’s why we make sure your first experience is welcoming and comfortable. You’ll begin with a free, private introduction to the studio, where we’ll take the time to get to know you and answer any questions you have. Our beginner-friendly classes are designed for all fitness levels. Led by encouraging and experienced instructors, each class includes a gentle warm-up, stretching, and an introduction to the fundamentals—no prior experience required. You’ll be supported every step of the way!

what is the dress code?

For TaeKwon-Do training you’ll need a dobok, the traditional practice uniform, which may be purchased after a few lessons. For self-defense classes or when you’re just starting, feel free to wear clothes that are comfortable and allow for movement—think sweatpants, gym shorts, or other loose-fitting athletic wear.

Shoes are not permitted on the training floor to maintain cleanliness and safety. If you need to wear shoes for any reason, you can purchase special training shoes that are only worn in the dojang (training area). Clean, non-slip socks are also acceptable.

How often should I attend class?

If you’re serious about growing in your martial arts practice, we recommend training at least twice a week. Coming three times a week is ideal to get the most out of your training—physically, mentally, and technically. That said, it’s not just about how often you show up—it’s about staying consistent. Whether it’s two classes or more, regular practice is the key to building skills, staying motivated, and making steady progress.
